Jakobsen played five games in the national team with Sorensen and revealed a conversation about the A-League and its qualities subsequently led to his arrival.

The 30-year-old spoke of the importance in his development as a footballer and person on the back of moving to a new country.

He also ruled out any possibilities of returning to the national team, but spoke of Sorensen’s guidance to his defenders after 17 seasons in the EPL with Sunderland, Aston Villa and Stoke City.

“It’s always nice to have a goalkeeper behind your back who is coaching all the time and demanding stuff like we have to go up, left or right,” Jakobsen said.

“If you have a guy standing behind you who is shouting at you, we have to be alert all the time and he can help you a bit, so it makes it easier.

“I talked to Thomas and he was quite good at making a picture of how it is here, how the club works and the ambitions. For me it was very important to come to a club where they have big ambitions and want to win trophies.”

Jakobsen comes to the A-League with European experience under his belt after stints in Holland, Spain and Norway as well as playing for a total of five Danish clubs.

The Dane signed for City at the beginning of September and scored in the first two minutes of his debut in the 4-1 FFA Cup quarter-final win over Western Sydney Wanderers last week.

“It was a good beginning (Wanderers game), we dominated in big periods of the game and of course after they got the red card, the tempo increased,” Jakobsen said.

“Until then I think it was a good tempo and I think the first half was okay, the type of game we want to play is quite good compared to Denmark, I think it’s a least at the same level if not better.”

Jakobsen scored just his second goal in five years in classy fashion – a bicycle kick which shortly after had fans saying he wasn’t renowned as an aerial threat.

“It was a once in a lifetime I think,” he joked.

“I was a bit surprised myself, so you shouldn’t get used to it. I’ll do all that I can when we have set pieces, but those kind of goals, I don’t think you’re going to see it again.”
