VEDRAN Janjetovic waited more than seven years to make his second senior appearance for Sydney FC and was determined to enjoy the moment.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper slammed the brakes on the Sky Blues’ four-game losing streak with a confident display in their nil-nil draw against Heart on Sunday.
Officially, that was his maiden first-team appearance for the harboursiders, but the Croatian-born shot stopper knows better.
At 17 he came off the bench in the club’s first ever match that ended in an emphatic 6-1 win over NSW Premier League outfit, Manly United, at Cromer Park.
“It’s been quite a while,” he said of his return to senior team action for the Sky Blues.
Speaking after a “pretty tough” training session under new coach Frank Farina, the player revealed his long association with the club which has seen him work alongside the likes of Mark Bosnich, Zeljko Kalac, Jim Fraser, John Filan and Clint Bolton.
“It goes back to the very start of the club,” Janjetovic said. “I was always training with the team – even when Jimmy Fraser was the keeper coach here when they first started.
“I was still a teenager when I played in their first ever game. I was just sitting on the bench for one of the first trial games and was called up.”
He went on to help the youth team lift the inaugural title but nerve damage to both arms prevented him signing a senior contract with the club until earlier this year.
And, as he told au.fourfourtwo.com, not even Sydney’s precarious position at the bottom of the table could overshadow the moment.
“To be honest I didn’t think of any of those things – I just went out there and enjoyed it,” he said.
“You can’t think about things like that, it’s just going to get over the top of you and you’re going to make a silly error.
“I just went in normal, like it was any other match. It was no different. It doesn’t matter whether we lost one or 10 in a row.
“It was a big game for us but I just focused myself and just went out there with fun in mind, to enjoy it and play.
“And when you do – and I think everyone is like that – you play well and get a result.”
It was only Sydney’s second clean sheet of the campaign.
After haemorrhaging 22 goals in the first eight rounds something had to give – and this case it was the club’s number one, Ivan Necevski, who was benched in favour of his younger rival.
Janjetovic hailed his teammate’s professionalism, admitting life was “tricky” for goalkeepers who had limited opportunities to impress.
“Me and Ivan are very good mates on and off the pitch, we always help each other out,” he said. “(Ivan) gives me advice and stuff which I appreciate.
“Football’s a funny sport – one week you’re in and one week you’re out and especially for goalkeepers there’s only one spot. But you can’t take it personally.”
Next up is a tough away assignment to Wellington Phoenix where Sydney started their season, and downward spiral, with a 2-0 loss.
Farina’s remit is to get the struggling Sky Blues to the finals and Janjetovic, who is a near certainty to be between the sticks, says the best way to achieve that is one game at a time
“That’s what we’re hoping – that’s what we’re aiming for – but we can’t look that far ahead,” he said of Sydney’s finals push.
“We’d love to be in the finals but with only 18 games to go we’ve got to focus game by game. For us the next thing is Wellington and getting a result there – that would be great.”
