SHINJI Okazaki scored twice in the first half to lead Japan to a convincing 4-0 victory over Chile in the opening match of the Kirin Cup in Osaka.
The Shimizu S-Pulse striker netted twice inside four first-half minutes before defender Yuki Abe and VVV Venlo midfielder Keisuke Honda sealed the win in the second half.
Japan, who were without Celtic midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura and Urawa Reds centre-back Marcus Tulio Tanaka, are preparing for the June 6 World Cup qualifier against Uzbekistan, which could potentially secure their trip to South Africa with a win in Tashkent with games against Qatar and Australia to spare.
"I'm very much satisfied that our players played how we intended to play," Japan coach Takeshi Okada said.
Next in the annual friendly tournament, Chile take on Belgium in Chiba on Friday before Japan face Belgium on Sunday at the National Stadium in Tokyo.
Chile striker Esteban Paredes was denied by Japan goalkeeper Seigo Narazaki after 17 minutes, with Okazaki opening the scoring three minutes later when he reacted first to Honda's effort being saved.
Okazaki doubled the lead after racing onto Yuji Nakazawa's through ball before beating Chile goalkeeper Miguel Pinto.
Fabian Orellana fired over for Chile, who are preparing for next month's World Cup qualifying matches against Paraguay and Bolivia, but seven minutes into the second half Reds defender Abe headed home the third from Endo's corner.
Paderes, substitute midfielder Edson Puch and defender Isamael Fuentes all had good chances for Chile as the second half progressed, but they failed to find a breakthrough and Honda sealed the win in stoppage time.
"We had a hard time," said Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa. "Our zone defence was not good enough and accurate enough, and our forwards couldn't score from the chances we had.
"If we had fully used our chances, the outcome would have been different. But overall, Japan were a better side today."
