The Socceroos may be forced into a defensive re-shuffle with skipper Mile Jedinak in doubt for the 2018 World Cup qualifier against UAE on Wednesday morning (1.30am AEST).
Jedinak hasn’t trained since Australia arrived in Abu Dhabi on Sunday due to an injury which the Socceroos camp has only identified as a “knock”.
The Australia captain played in defensive midfield in the 2-0 win over Iraq on Thursday, with Mark Milligan his likely replacement, while youngster Jackson Irvine is an option too.
However, Milligan put in a solid shift in central defence alongside Trent Sainsbury against Iraq and coach Ange Postecoglou may not want to break up the pair.
If he does, moving Milligan into Jedinak’s role could see Matt Spiranovic deployed alongside Sainsbury.
Spiranovic was a surprise non-starter against Iraq and hasn’t played for Australia since the 2-0 loss to Jordan last October.
Jedinak refused to rule himself out of the UAE game at the official pre-match press conference.
“Obviously I have a little bit of a knock. I’ve been taking it day by day,” Jedinak said.
“We’ll see how we get on today (Monday), I’ve got a full day ahead of me, so we’ll see how I go.”
Postecoglou said he would give Jedinak as long as possible to prove his fitness.
“We’ll give him every chance to recover and see whether he’s available on game day,” Postecoglou said.
“When we’re in camp we understand things even happen on game day where we need to change the line-up.
“That’s happened in the past and no one’s even known about it.
“We’re hoping he’ll be okay but if he’s not then we’ll be able to bring in somebody else to do the job.”
Alex Gersbach could also come into the side at left-back after Brad Smith’s unconvincing display against Iraq.
