Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak’s availability for next month’s 2018 World Cup qualification play-offs against Syria is in doubt after missing Aston Villa’s latest match overnight.
Jedinak was selected in Australia’s provisional 30-player squad for the Syria matches, but Villa boss Steve Bruce admitted his latest groin issue was a “concern”.
It remains to be seen if Jedinak makes the final cut in the squad, as it is understood he suffered a setback upon his return from injury having underwent a groin operation in July.
The captain was in a similar position for Australia’s recent qualifiers against Japan and Thailand but coach Ange Postecoglou opted to leave him out due to a lack of game-time.
Jedinak missed those qualifiers, along with the Confederations Cup in June.
The last time Australia lost a game that Jedinak played in was against England in May last year.

Jedinak was replaced at half-time in last week’s 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough and missed the 3-0 Championship win over Barnsley on Saturday and Tuesday’s 2-0 League Cup loss to Boro.
“Mile Jedinak unfortunately is feeling his groin,” Bruce said after the Boro defeat.
After taking Jedinak off at half-time last week, Bruce had said: "Mile's a bit sore which is a bit of a concern if I'm being honest.”
The extent of the injury and whether Jedinak has re-aggravated the groin problem is yet to be confirmed by Villa.
Australia are due to play Syria in Malaysia on October 5, before the return leg in Sydney on October 10.
