Australia skipper Mile Jedinak says the entire Socceroos squad is out to impress new coach Bert van Marwijk in the matches against Norway and Colombia.
Van Marwijk's first game as manager of Australia after replacing Ange Postecoglou will come against Norway on Friday (Saturday 4am AEDT).
Along with Tim Cahill, Jedinak is the longest-serving player in the national team. The midfielder debuted under Pim Verbeek in 2008 and has played under five different Socceroos coaches.
Jedinak said it is exciting to be entering a new era.
"It’s new, it’s been nice to spend the time together with everybody as a group," the captain said.
"We all know the circumstances and it’s just about getting the work in, and we’ve done that to this point and we’ll continue to do that going forward.
"I think it's only normal when you have a new manager and new staff come in everybody has to impress, everybody wants to put their best foot forward.
"No one really wants to waste time in doing that. We know we’ve got a long path ahead but there's opportunity there to get some good work in and I think with that comes a lot of excitement.
"We are overall preparing for a World Cup and that’s exciting to do it with a new manager and a new way of doing it. I’m just excited as anybody."
Jedinak endured an injury-interrupted 2017 but has been a regular for his club Aston Villa since October, making 20 first-team appearances.
The 33-year-old admits it is nice to be back playing regularly and contributing.
"I had a little bit of a spell out at the start of the season," he said.
"But I’m back, first of all really excited to be back here and to be back on club football. I’m enjoying my football, happy to be back. Every player wants to do their best at all times.
"As you get a little bit older and you have the experience to deal with certain things, even the way certain games go, I think it's just being able to contribute, not only here but back at clubland.
"It's just nice to do that on a daily basis."
