Australia skipper Mile Jedinak concedes the 2-2 draw with Thailand was a “big disappointment” but says the team must move forward with five games in World Cup qualifying to play.
Jedinak scored both of the Socceroos’ goals from the penalty spot in the result which leaves Australia third in the group with nine points from five games.
Australia sits behind Saudi Arabia and Japan (both 10 points), while UAE is three points and goal difference behind the Socceroos, but plays Iraq later Wednesday morning.
The Socceroos still have three home matches to come but are next in action in March, facing Iraq away in Tehran, before meeting UAE five days later in Sydney.
“To come away with less than three points here is a real shame, it’s a big disappointment,” Jedinak told Fox Sports.
“There’s still five games to go, we know that.
“We’ve got more of them at home. We take all of that on board.
“We have to move forward. We need to assess what’s gone wrong here, I’m sure we’ll do that. We’ve got to rectify it quickly.”
The Australia captain said the Socceroos let Thailand off the hook after a bright start.
“We got into some really good positions,” Jedinak said.
“I thought maybe in the final third we lacked that cutting edge, whether it be a pass or a shot just to get them working.
“We let them off the hook a few times and allowed them to get out a bit too easily.
“In saying that they get into our box a couple of times and they score two. It’s a shame but that’s World Cup qualification for you.”
Australia defender Trent Sainsbury preferred to look on the bright side.
“I think you’ve got to look at the positive things out of tonight,” he said.
“Undefeated on the road and undefeated in the group still. We’re a point off top.
“It’s the one per centers tonight which hurt us. I don’t think we were good enough, we weren’t at our best, credit to Thailand.”
Goalkeeper Mat Ryan argued his side lacked commitment and desperation with so much at stake.
“It’s very disappointing once again, we go away from our fundamentals again,” he said. “Too many cheap turnovers tonight.
“We need to look at ourselves as a team and we need to give more. At the end of the day there’s a World Cup up for stake.
“It’s not as if we’re playing with that commitment or desperation to realize that’s the end prize.”
