Newcastle Jets have confirmed the signing of versatile midfielder Johnny Koutroumbis as an injury replacement for Daniel Alessi, who suffered a season ending in pre-season.
Koutroumbis, who was linked with the Jets earlier this week, last played for Adelaide United’s youth team and will stay on with the Hunter outfit until the end of the 2016/17 campaign.
And the 18-year-old has already targeted some big goals for the months ahead.
“I am pretty excited for what the future holds,” Koutroumbis said. “I am actually lost for words with regards to how quickly it all happened over the past week.
“Now that I am here one of my goals would have to be to start an A-League game and be in the first eleven at some point this season. Personally I am also aiming to score a goal for the club this season.”
Head Coach Mark Jones worked with the midfielder during the 2016 PS4 National Premier League (South Australia) season and believes he has what it takes to progress to the next level.
Most recently the youngster joined the Reds for their pre-season tour of Malaysia and played 45 minutes in a 3-0 win over Kuala Lumpur FA in late August.
“Johnny played in multiple roles for us in the youth team in Adelaide and has spent time training with their first team,” Jones said.
“He is someone I think can do well in the Hyundai A-League, and now it is up to him to showcase himself the best he can.”
Jones added: “For a young boy Johnny is a leader. He is an exceptional athlete and has good endurance and is quick. He is a winner and did some special things that helped win us some games in Adelaide last season.
“Johnny is a well-grounded boy and is very hungry to play in the A-League. He is over the moon to be given an opportunity in Newcastle.”
Koutroumbis, who will wear the number 28 kit for the club, began his football journey with West Adelaide Soccer Club at the age of six.
He joined Adelaide United’s Youth program at 17 after playing in the National Premier League as a 16-year-old.
