High Flying Newcastle Jets have implored their supporters to get behind them for tonight’s game against Western Sydney at the Newcastle International Sports Centre.
Newcastle kick of their Summer Football Festival tonight and with kids able to go for free, the Jets will be looking to emulate their round two attendance against Perth Glory of almost 15,000.
Newcastle’s in-form striker Andrew Nabbout said having a large number of supporters at home will provide a major boost in getting the three points.
“It’s a massive factor,” he told FourFourtwo. "Getting 15,000 fans in the second game against Perth was huge for us.
"The weeks following that, the weather has been pretty bad, and we also had a game on a Thursday night against Victory which was also raining.
“It’s the holiday season now, so most people are off work and it’s a massive chance for the people of Newcastle to come down and support us and we need that support as much as anything else.”
The Wanderers claimed their first win in eight games against Central Coast last week, and while Nabbout feels the Jets will be facing a challenging opponent, he said Newcastle can get the win.
“It’s going to be a tough one,” he said. “They are coming into this match off the back of a good win against the Mariners, especially coming off a 5-0 loss to Sydney the game before.
“It just shows they are up for it and really buying into Jossep Gombau’s beliefs and strategies so they have picked up some confidence.
“But it’s our job is to bring them back down to earth and really cement ourselves in that top two spot.
"We are four points ahead of City at the moment and nine points ahead of Adelaide so it’s a massive chance to make that gap bigger and close that gap between us and Sydney.”
As well as the Wanderers, the Jets Summer Football schedule includes Melbourne Victory (December 29) and Sydney FC (January 3).
Ahead of tonight’s game, Nabbout feels Newcastle can prove they are A-League title contenders with victory in all three contests.
“At the moment people are expecting us to fall,” he said.
“Last year at this point of the season we were flying and then went on that slump.
“So, if we can take maximum points from all three games it’s going to put the pressure on other teams and really show what we are about.
“All those three games are the ones that you look at making a big difference towards the end of the season - it can really make the difference in terms of winning or losing.
“So that is why we have to try and go for maximum points in those games and really stamp our authority in league.”
“It’s especially important to get a win tonight and playing the Wanderers at home is a massive chance to get three points."
