Newcastle Jets have overturned 11 years of history to pull off a 2-1 win over Perth Glory at nib Stadium on Saturday night.
All three goals came in the opening half, with the visitors forced to come from behind to clinch their first win in Perth since 2015.
Glory's Nebojsa Marinkovic opened the scoring (7') with a stunning strike from the edge of the area.
Kenny Lowe welcomed back some key signings - Josh Risdon, Adam Taggart and Rhys Williams.
But any thoughts of a routine victory were soon scuppered as Andrew Hoole (21') clinically restored parity with a cool left-footed finish, before Milan Smiljanic’s own-goal gifted the visitors a deserved lead at the break.
A combination of Newcastle wastefulness and fine goalkeeping from Liam Reddy ensured the match remained alive until the end, but Mark Jones’ side saw out the second half to sew up their second win of the season.
Newcastle went into the match in last place on the table but climbed to 7th off the back of the win, to secure their first win in eight matches. Glory remain in 5th on the ladder.
GOALS
1-0 Glory: Nebojsa Marinkovic, 7’
Chris Harold smartly spotted Marinkovic on the edge of the area and the Serbian made no mistake, curling a sweet first-time effort inside the near post.
1-1 Jets: Andrew Hoole, 21’
Hoole was played in on goal by Devante Clut and took his opportunity with aplomb, sliding a calm left-foot finish into the bottom far corner.
1-2 Jets: Milan Smiljanic OG, 45’+1
Newcastle went ahead with a well-earned slice of fortune when Smiljanic’s flying defensive header flew into the top corner of his own goal.
