The 30-year-old has 22 caps for Venezuela and has spent the past two seasons at Greek club AEK.

The Jets are hunting a Marquee player and Vargas is believed to be the man they will sign.

"There's no doubt that it's going to be a marquee player and a high-quality player," Coach Ernie Merrick told the Newcastle Herald of the club's impending marquee signing.

"It gives us quality in that area (midfield), which is the most exciting area of football, in the front third.”

The Jets most recent marquee signing was former England and Liverpool striker Emile Heskey who played for the club in 2014.

More to come.
