Jones is a Newcastle native and has twice previously been an assistant coach at the Jets.

He is currently coach of Adelaide United's youth team and W-League team but reportedly notified the club on Thursday of his intention to return to Newcastle.

Jones told The World Game on Thursday he was yet to be formally offered the position.

"Obviously I'm keen to get the opportunity, but I don't want to jeopardise that possibility by talking too much," Jones said.

"So, hoping to get an opportunity and hoping to find out soon, I guess."

The Jets have been on the hunt for a new coach after sacking former mentor Scott Miller on September 7.

Miller’s assistant Luciano Trani left the club the following day with Jets youth coach Clayton Zane overseeing the first team since.
