Newcastle Jets target Nathan Burns will be available on a free transfer when his contract expires with Tokyo FC next month.
Burns joined the J.League side in 2015 after a successful period with Wellington Phoenix where he scored 14 goals in 24 appearances and picked up the 2014/15 Johnny Warren Medal.
Former Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick who was appointed to lead the Jets ahead of the 2017/18 campaign has made no secret of his desire to reunite with the fringe Socceroo.
The pacey winger is also likely to be on the radar of other A-League clubs
Burns, 29, has been on the outer at FC Tokyo this season, dropped from the first team after making 26 appearances for four goals.
A 24 capped Socceroo, Burns has starred in the A-League for Phoenix and Adelaide United but struggled to establish himself overseas with stints at Greek Super League side AEK Athens and K-League outfit Incheon United.
