SOCCEROO and A-League target Scott Chipperfield was on target again as FC Basel routed FC Sion 4-0 to return to the top of the Swiss Super League.
The visitors opened the scoring through Orhan Mustafi after 41 minutes and Chipperfield, still a target for Newcastle Jets, then doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Two goals in as many minutes from Mustafi (80) and Marko Perovic (82) then put the match to bed and allowed Basle to move a point clear of FC Zurich, who have a game in hand.
Chipperfield's future remains the subject of considerable speculation. Basel are thought to be keen to persuade him to stay in Switzerland but Newcastle Jets coach Gary van Egmond confirmed earlier in the week that the club was keen to see a deal done for the player.
North Queensland Fury pulled the plug on negotiations with Chipperfield after initially believing they were close to a deal.
Elsewhere in Switzerland, strugglers Lucerne battled out a goalless draw with Aarau but are still four points adrift at the foot of the table.
