Newcastle Jets has opened talks about a new deal with midfielder Steven Ugarkovic, who will be off-contract at the end of this season.
Ugarkovic joined the Jets on a one-and-a-half year deal from Croatian club Osijek in January 2016. He was signed by former Newcastle boss Scott Miller.
The 22-year-old has made 19 appearances for the Jets, scoring two goals. The former Sydney United and Marconi Stallions junior has represented Australia at Under-23 level and Croatia at Under-19 level.
Newcaslte CEO Lawrie McKinna confirmed to FourFourTwo that the club is keen to keep the defensive midfielder in the Hunter.
“We have spoken to him, yes definitely [we want him to stay],” McKinna said.
Ugarkovic’s manager declined to comment.
The youngster hails from western Sydney and is the son of former NSL footballer John Ugarkovic.
