The former Newcastle Jets marksman left no doubt about where his club future lay, with his brother tweeting a pic of himself lying on North Shore's Balmoral Beach with the initials SFC written in sunscreen on his chest.
Griffiths landed a $1 million move to Shanghai Shenhua in January this year where he played alongside former Chelsea greats Didier Drogba and Nikolas Anelka.
Sydney have leaked 23 goals in 10 rounds but rather than shore up the defence have opted to go in the hunt for further goals, relieving some of the scoring pressure off international marquee Alessandro Del Piero.
Just last month it was reported that goal-shy Western Sydney Wanderers had knocked back an opportunity to sign the 33-year-old Johnny Warren medallist and A-League Golden Boot winner.
Former Sydney FC coach and then assistant Ian Crook, who knew Griffiths from their Newcastle days, had spoken to Griffiths about a potential short-term move to the harboursiders in the past.
But a year ago it looked unlikely that Griffiths would ever play in Australia again.
At the time his agent told au.fourfourtwo.com: “He doesn’t want to come back at the moment. He likes it there in Beijing. The fans love him and the lifestyle’s really good for him. I’ve received no complaints from him.
“I don’t think he’ll come back at his age. His best bet is to stay in China."
Griffiths achieved A-League notoriety for the infamous sack-whack where he struck a linesman in the groin during an F3 derby at Bluetongue.
Griffiths former clubs include Swiss outfit Neuchâtel Xamax, Leeds United, Avispa Fukuoka (Japan) and Beijing Goan (China). He made 18 appearances for Shenhua and scored six goals.
Sydney have called a press conference to unveil their new striker at training tomorrow morning.
