SYDNEY FC striker Joel Griffiths is facing a shock three match ban for abusing match officials towards the end of last weekend's Big Blue - and will miss tomorrow's clash with Newcastle Jets.
The FFA match review panel unusually came down with the suspension verdict just two hours before this week's round kicked off, instead of handing down their judgement at the start of the week as normal.
The incident happened in the 89th minute of Sydney's 3-1 defeat to Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park but it's not clear why the referee did not deal with the issue at the time.
It's also not clear why Football Federation Australia's match review panel took until the end of the week before handing down the suspension.
Griffiths pleaded guilty to the charge of abusing match officials and asked for clemency based on his admission.
But the MRP - made up of Simon Micallef, Alan Davidson and Con Diomis - today suspended Griffiths immediately for the Jets game under their mandatory one game suspension for the offence.
He was also banned for a further two games but has until noon on Monday to appeal against those suspensions.
Today Sydney FC CEO Tony Pignata said the club were considering their options.
“Sydney FC is disappointed with what happened late in the game last weekend against Melbourne Victory that has led to Joel Griffiths receiving a three-match suspension,” said Pignata.
“Sydney FC prides itself on setting standards in community behaviour and we expect our players to uphold those standards and set a good example.
“Joel has shown remorse for what happened and Sydney FC will consider its options in relation to appealing the severity of the suspension.
“Sydney FC will be making no further comment on the issue until a decision has been made regarding any possible appeal, which must be actioned by 12.00pm on Monday (4 February).”
