THE Qantas Joeys have won the Asean Under 16 Youth Championship after beating Bahrain 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in Jakarta.
The Aussies had been trailing to Ali Muneer's first half goal before Marc Warren grabbed an equaliser seven minutes from the end to force extra-time.
With no further scoring the championship was left to be settled by penalties.
Australia goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas saved Bahrain's first effort and as the tension increased, Kerem Bulut stepped forward for the crucial kick when the scores were locked at 4-4 - Brendan Hamill having missed for Australia to ensure stalemate.
The Joeys leading scorer made no mistake, firing the ball home and the trophy was Australia's.
