If there was as much competition for the rest of the Socceroos squad as there was for the goalkeeping position, Australian football would look very different today.
While Mat Ryan is outshining practically every other Premier League goalkeeper, 35-year-old Brad Jones is one-match away from securing his third trophy since moving to Dutch club Feyenoord.
Jones has been at the heart of a resurgence for the once-giants of Dutch football, with Netherlands-legend Giovanni van Bronckhorst leading the club to its first Eredivisie title in years last season.
Jones kept the most cleansheets by a Feyenoord keeper in 18 years in the process. Now, after beating Willem II, Feyenoord have a shot at another trophy when they face AZ Alkmaar on Monday morning (AEST).
A KNVB Cup win would restore some shine to a rather dull follow-up for the Dutch club. The Rotterdam side also had a disappointing Champions League campaign, losing five of their six group stage matches.
This season has been slightly harder for Giovanni Van Bronckhorst's men, but in no part due to Jones - Feyenoord sit fourth in the league, but have conceded the same amount of goals as league leaders PSV Eindhoven.
This has culminated in a Socceroos re-call for Jones after years in exile, with Bert van Marwijk already saying he rates the Aussie very highly.
