AUSSIES ABROAD: Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones had a debut to forget as Liverpool were dumped out of the Carling Cup on penalties by League Two side Northampton Town.
Jones, who moved from Middlesbrough to Liverpool in August, made his maiden appearance for the Reds who were knocked out of the tournament after the match ended 2-2 after 120 minutes.
Milan Jovanovic had put Liverpool ahead early before Billy Mckay equalised early in the second half from close-range with Jones no chance.
The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and Town went ahead on 98 minutes when Michael Jacobs converted after Jones had made two sharp saves.
Liverpool equalised through David Ngog but it would be Northampton who progressed 4-2 on penalties.
Elsewhere, Brett Emerton played a full 90 minutes for Blackburn Rovers as they lost 3-1 at Aston Villa. There was no Shane Lowry for Villa, nor Vince Grella for Rovers.
Meanwhile, Aussie teenager Bailey Wright was an unused sub as Preston lost 2-1 at Wigan, while Trent McClenahan wasn't involved as Scunthorpe lost 5-2 to Manchester United.
In Italy's Serie A, Mark Bresciano was an unused substitute as Lazio drew 1-1 with AC Milan.
In Germany's Bundesliga, Dario Vidosic was a 90th minute substitute as FC Nurnberg defeated VfB Stuttgart 2-1.
Elsewhere, Mitch Langerak was on the bench again as Borussia Dortmund crushed Kaiserslautern 5-0.
In Holland's KNVB Beker, Jimmy Downey was in the Sparta Rotterdam starting line-up at the Philips Stadion as they went down 3-0 to PSV Eindhoven. Downey was replaced after 33 minutes.
Elsewhere, Brett Holman and James Holland were absent as AZ Alkmaar beat Den Bosch 3-2, while there was no Tommy Oar, Adam Sarota or Michael Zullo as FC Utrecht drew 1-1 at De Graafschap before progressing on penalties.
In Scotland's Co-Insurance Cup, Danny Invincibile was a 79th minute substitute for Kilmarnock as they accounted for Hibernian 3-1.
In Switzerland's Super League, Scott Chipperfield was a 71st minute substitute as FC Basel drew 2-2 at home with Grasshoppers.
In Sweden's Allsvenskan, Ante Covic put in a full shift as IF Elfsborg drew 1-1 with IFK Goteborg.
In Czech Republic's Cup, Kerem Bulut was not in the Mlada Boleslav side which drew 1-1 with Kunice before progressing on penalties.
In Asia's Champions League, Sasa Ognenovski played a full game in defence as Seongnam Ilhwa held on to qualify for the semi-finals despite a 2-0 loss at Suwon Bluewings. Seongnam went through on aggregate, 4-3.
In Singapore's S.League, Goran Subara put in a full shift as Gombak United lost 1-0 to leaders Etoile.
