The England striker has been linked with a switch to both former club Liverpool and Everton, with manager Harry Redknapp reported to be looking to free up funds to move for Nice frontman Loic Remy.

However, Jordan sees the 6ft 7in forward as playing an important part for Spurs in the new season, which will see them chasing qualification for the Champions League.

Jordan - speaking at Hampden Park in Glasgow to promote ESPN's live broadcast of the Scotland against Sweden game in Stockholm on August 11, and the start of the Scottish and English Premier Leagues - told Press Association Sport: "We had a lot of competition when we brought Peter in and he has done very, very well.

"I don't think we will let him go too easily. He is a player that has proved himself at Tottenham."

Striker Robbie Keane has returned to White Hart Lane from a loan spell at Celtic.

Jordan feels the Republic of Ireland forward has staked a claim to feature again in Harry Redknapp's plans.

"He has been our best player pre-season and scored two at the weekend," said the Spurs assistant boss.

"Robbie has come back in good nick, has trained and has played terrific."

Jordan continued: "When we took over under Harry Redknapp, Spurs were in big trouble.

"We had two points from eight games and he made a number of signings. He brought Robbie back and Robbie was a fantastic signing, and we stayed up.

"We have built from that and he has been part of that. He has been so important, not just on the field but in the dressing room as well. He has been a big player for us."

Redknapp admits he would like another couple of bodies to freshen up the squad, but also accepts one or two could be allowed to move on to.

"We have progressed. We weren't quite good enough last year to win the Premier League, so you are looking to improve and you may have to give up one player to get another," said Jordan.

"I don't know what way that will come, it depends on the demand for our players and what we are looking for.

"We have got some terrific players and we certainly want to keep them but you are looking to bring in and improve your squad by getting other terrific players."

Jermain Defoe was one of four Spurs' World Cup players not selected by Fabio Capello for England's friendly against Hungary on Wednesday night.

The striker is carrying a minor groin problem, but Jordan is hopeful Defoe will be fit for the opening game of the new Barclays Premier League season against Manchester City.

"I don't think it is anything serious," said the former Scotland international.

"Jermain went for a scan and there is an ever so slight tear there.

"It is more precaution than anything. I think he should be all right.

"We have had to hold him back. He was desperate to train in the latter part of last week but he was pulled out.

"We are hoping that some time this week he will be back in training with the lads."
