World Cup winner Juninho this morning charmed a packed a media room at the Sydney Football Stadium with his humble manner.

And he believes Sydney is capable of regaining the status of being Australia’s top side.

“I’m looking forward to playing for Sydney and in front of the Cove," he said. "That’s what I’m looking forward to. It’s a new experience for me.

"I can’t wait to start the games."

Juninho appeared in excellent shape and says he hopes to be ready to make his highly-anticipated debut for round one of the A-League.

He added: “I was training in Brazil so I’m not far away from match fitness. I hope to be prepared by the time the games start.”

Branko Culina, beaming at the prospect of working with such a high-profile player, believes that his new playmaker may even have a greater impact that the club’s first marquee star in Dwight Yorke.

“Very few players have ever in this country played at his level. Certainly I can’t think of a player in Australia who has won a World Cup. Juninho brings that,” said Culina.

“Dwight, in all that he had to offer and most of it was good, was not in the same league.

"And that’s not being disrespectful to Dwight Yorke, because he was absolutely superb. I just think that Juninho gives you that little bit extra.

“What Juninho offers us is enormous with his experience and knowledge. I think he’ll fit Sydney FC like a glove.

"He joins a team that loves playing football and that’s something that Juninho enjoys as well.

"It’s a huge, huge coup not only for Sydney FC but for the league in general.”

Asked what position he is likely to play Juninho he responded: “I have a fair idea about where Juninho is best-suited but he has to fit in with what’s best for Sydney FC as well.

"We’ll look at what strengths are of our team but I think it’s fair to say that people like Juninho need to be on the ball and involved. Certainly that’s going to be a position for him.”

Most tellingly, Juninho was keen to press home the fact that he intends to prove his value on the field and that he is able to handle any pressure that comes with being the club’s marquee player.

“There’s always pressure but once you play in the Brazilian national team, you have to win all the games. I know how to deal with pressure,” said Juninho.

“If it’s possible I will always entertain but it has to be suitable for the team as well. I think Sydney are prepared to win the league.”
