Tomi Juric believes France struggled to create attacking opportunities against the Socceroos, and the Green and Gold can take plenty of positives from their 2018 World Cup opener.
Australia went down 2-1 to France in Kazan, a late Paul Pogba goal handing the Europeans the Group C victory.
Les Bleus took the lead controversially from the penalty spot after the VAR intervened.
Speaking after the game, Juric said the Socceroos were undone by "controversial decisions".
"I'm disappointed," he said.
"We knew if we stayed organised and compact we could make it difficult for them, and it showed today. I don’t think they really created anything solid enough. They could say they were the better team and created enough chances to win the game.
"There were two controversial decisions. The penalty - you can judge for yourself - some might say yes, some might say no. How much luck do you need to grab a goal like they did for the second one?
"For me, I prefer the natural way of football. It just gives the game the natural flow, the momentum, the atmospshere. I'm not a big fan of the VAR, but it is what it is."
Australia next face Denmark in Samara on June 21.
Juric believes the Socceroos can go into that match confident on the back of their display against France.
"We did a good job and if we continue to play this way and with this passion and togetherness like we did today, we can be pretty optimistic about the next two games," the striker said.
"I'm positive not getting the result today will open up a lot more doors for offensive actions and possibly even changes. I'm just preparing as best I can on and off the pitch, in training and making sure I do everything right.
"If called upon I will do my job to the best of ability. Andrew's quick, he's dynamic and he moves a lot. He makes it very difficult for the defenders. Obviously that's not one of my strengths in my game, but I bring something different to the team."
