JUVENTUS enjoyed a winning start to their Peace Cup campaign tonight after overcoming Sevilla 2-1 at La Cartuja stadium in Seville.
Goals from Amauri and Vincenzo Iaquinta gave the Italian side a 2-0 lead and although Sevilla pulled a late goal back through Sebastien Squillaci, Juve held on to go top of Group A in the 12-team pre-season tournament.
Ciro Ferrara's side went ahead in the 27th minute when Amauri got on the end of Alessandro Del Piero's corner to power home a header from the edge of the six-yard box.
Sevilla pushed hard for the equaliser and Didier Zokora, Arouna Kone, Jesus Navas and Luis Fabiano all went close before Juve, who also hit the post through Claudio Marchisio's low drive, doubled their lead in the 67th minute.
A neat Jonathan Zebina pass gave Iaquinta possession in a dangerous position 25 yards out and he progressed to the edge of the box before firing a low shot past Andres Palop.
Sevilla continued to battle and they gave themselves a lifeline when the unmarked Squillaci headed in Jose Carlos' corner with 10 minutes to go, but the Andalusian side could not fashion an equaliser and they must now beat Seongnam on Sunday to give themselves any hope of finishing top of Group A.
Earlier this evening in Jerez, in the opening match of the Peace Cup, Ecuadorian side Liga de Quito beat Al-Ittihad 3-1 in Group B.
Neicer Reasco and Paul Ambrosi gave Quito a 2-0 half-time lead and Claudio Graf made it 3-0 midway through the second half before Al-Ittihad notched a consolation goal soon after through Saud Khariri.
Real Madrid are the other team in Group B, and their opening match is against Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ittihad at the Bernabeu on Sunday.
