Melbourne City coach John van’t Schip is looking towards Friday night’s game against Adelaide United, holding off any celebrations after reaching his first FFA Cup final.
City downed crosstown rival Melbourne Victory 2-0 on Tuesday night and will take on Sydney FC in the final at AAMI Park on November 30.
However, having to play just three days later has postponed any celebrations as his side aims to thwart reigning A-League champions Adelaide United on Friday.
“In the end it means a lot because we’re in the final, but of course when we’re coming in the final we want to win, that’s what they’re for,” Van’t Schip said.
“So we have now Adelaide, it’s still long before we play the final in five, six weeks. We have lot of league games in between and now we just have to focus now on Adelaide.
“This is history gone, you take it with us, it’s a great achievement, but Friday is Adelaide and that’s the next important game.”
Van’t Schip has recorded two wins against Victory in a fortnight after City recorded a 4-1 round two win.
The Dutchman said he could now see genuine progress in his team.
“Last few years already we’ve shown we match up in a lot of ways, finished ahead of them in the league, of course they won the cup,” he said.
“I think the last two years in the games we played against them, if you look at the games they’re always you never know what could happen, now we’ve won two in a row in a short period of time.
“It’s great to have this rivalry, it’s great to have these two teams in the city that want to be the best in the country and I think that’s only helping the game.
“We don’t to be seen as a team that’s only fighting, but we can do that together with the football we want to play, I think that’s a big win."
“It’s something we have to bring, I think the other thing is we have to keep playing in the discipline we work on and then we’re a team that’s difficult to beat and we can win a lot of games, so that’s what we have to be focused on and keep on working.”
