Melbourne City coach John van ’t Schip admits it's been tough going for his side since their FFA Cup victory – but they'll be reborn after the Christmas break.
Van ’t Schip spoke out about the A-League scheduling weeks ago after his FFA Cup semi-final 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory.
City return from a nine day break after a cluster of games over four weeks including the FFA Cup Final 1-0 win over league leaders Sydney FC.
The Dutchman now feels his team is reinvigorated to take on floundering Perth Glory on Tuesday night.
“It was a tough week… tough period actually (after the FFA Cup triumph),” Van’t Schip said.
“We had those three games in six days and on top of that two really big games against Sydney and Melbourne Victory, the boys really kept on working and put on an unbelievable effort.
“You could also see the freshness wasn’t really there as we would like and the boys felt that probably.
“(Now) they’ve had a few extra days off and hopefully now everybody is back, good and fresh to head into the next game.
“We had a good rest, had a good week of training so everyone looks very fresh so that’s out of the system.”
Van ’t Schip confirmed Michael Jakobsen has been ruled out after he pulled out of the pre-game warm-ups in last week’s 2-1 derby loss with a calf.
Osama Malik will also be sidelined for up to six weeks with a quad injury.
Despite admitting he was unhappy with the first half performance against Victory last week, he said he saw a significant improvement leading to the game being played on their terms.
Underachieving Glory sit seventh on the table with three wins this season – one being a 3-2 win over City in the previous meeting – but Van ’t Schip insists his team has improved significantly since Round 3.
“The last game doesn’t say we’ve started scoring more," he added. "They had 14 shots on goal and that was high because when we lost the ball we weren’t in good positions
“We want to make it right… we made a mis-step. We don’t look at it that way, it’s just another game.”
