Phoenix raced to a 2-0 half-time lead after goals from Matija Ljujic and Daniel Mullen, before the Jets hit back in the 48th minute through Andrew Nabbout.

The visitors rallied, with the third goal via Roy Krishna before a late Dimitri Petratos' penalty proved only consolation.

"The team showed really high team tactical discipline," Kalezic said.

"I am happy for the boys, for everybody in the club that we perform well today."

Kalezic was also delighted with his side's first-half display, seeing off Newcastle's thread from the start.

"We played really solid from the beginning," Kalezic said.

"I have to say, they created a couple of chances in the first half and we come without any damage through that period.

"Then we wait where the weaknesses of Newcastle are, and we are looking to punish them on that point.

"That’s what we did. We did what we discussed with each other before the game."

Wellington remain last, but close to within five points of the top six with the win.

Phoenix are at home to fifth-placed Adelaide United next Saturday.
