Kamau had a solid season for the Reds, best remembered for scoring in the 2016 A-League Grand Final, as well as a 90th minute winner against Melbourne Victory to help United eventually finish on top of the table.

The Kenyan-born winger was adamant he made the right decision and was looking to do the double at two different clubs.

“Personally for myself, my ambition coming to Melbourne City was the right move and the right decision for me and that’s in the past, that was last season. It’s a new season and I’ve come here to win the Championship again.

“The mindset is always for success, so coming here that’s what I’ve got as my goals, I want to win the championship again, the FFA Cup and also win the League.

“The direction of Melbourne City and the City group is a great one, they’re heading in a direction I think is positive and I came here because I wanted to be part of that. I think for my own personal career, making the move here was the best decision.”

Kamau arrived at Melbourne in May and works with former Reds Osama Malik and Ruon Tongyik as well as former assistant coach Michael Valkanis who continued his senior assistant coaching role from United at City.

The 21-year-old played in all three of City’s 2016 FFA Cup games and is in contention to start in Saturday's season opener against Wellington Phoenix.

Kamau spoke of the versatility in the squad after coach John van’t Schip elected to play a variety of formations.

“I think it gives us a lot of flexibility and it makes it harder for teams when they come up against us, it’s not just ‘Melbourne City play this way’, there’s a lot more to it,” he said.

“With the players we have such a strong squad, we can easily change from one formation to the other, so personally it’s not a real difference because the principles are very similar in what we do and the way we play.

“The facilities are fantastic, you can ask anyone that, it’s probably the benchmark for the A-League. As far as the team, I think all the boys are top people and top players, so it’s going to be a good season.”
