Bruce Kamau returned from his injury in style, showing exactly the flair and creativity that Western Sydney Wanderers have been desperately searching for in recent weeks.
Kamau was one of the few bright spots in the defeat to Melbourne City as he controlled the right flank and produced a gorgeous first touch cross to help take an early lead.
The forward was disappointed with the result but pleased with his own comeback after plenty of hard work.
“I was back playing on the wing and that’s where I’m most comfortable and that’s where I enjoy playing the most,” he told FTBL.
“I’ve been working hard in pre-season and then I came down with an injury in my groin and I’ve been working hard at the gym the past few weeks to get back on the pitch and it’s good to be back out there.”
The 24 year old has had a knack of following one outstanding performance with another two or three disappointing displays. He is confident that with his experience he will now be able to consistently perform at the level fans only see in flashes.
“I think I have an older, wiser head on my shoulders. I’ve played in the league for a few years now. Just being able to have that experience, I’ll be able to look back at the times where I probably haven’t backed myself in consistent form and look at the things I can change this time.”
Speaking on the game, unlike his coach, Kamau kept a cool head and refused to be drawn into speculation about the penalty, but acknowledged that the call changed the outcome of the game drastically.
“I think when they get that first penalty, they get a bit of momentum," he said. "Up to that point we were pretty comfortable in the game and I think the way the game was playing out we probably would have looked likely to get another goal.
“It just gave them a bit more confidence and brought them back to life. In a game like that you want to kill your opposition off when you have that chance and we didn’t do that."
