With the 2007 McDonald’s Kanga Cup quickly approaching, an increase in the number of teams have entered this year’s week long junior football tournament as applications have now closed.

This year’s tournament will consist of 175 teams – an increase of almost 20 teams on last year – with 88 ACT teams taking part. New South Wales is the highest represented state with 69 teams making the trip to the nation’s capital along with four Victorian teams, five teams from South Australia and three from Queensland. That equates to around 3000 participants and coaches involved making the Kanga Cup the largest junior football tournament in the southern hemisphere.

The international teams competing at the Kanga Cup are three New Zealand teams the Rotorua Reps, Upper Hutt and Three Kings United ‘Belles’ coming from across the Tasman, Korea’s Singok Primary School returning and this year’s inaugural Kanga Cup Asian Fellowship being Providence Gujarat from India.

To break it down, there are 124 boys teams competing across the seven age categories and 51 girls teams. The under 11 boys is the largest category as 34 teams will be battling it out for Kanga Cup and plate supremacy.

The McDonald's Kanga Cup is the most prestigious youth tournament of its kind to be currently operating within Australia and is one of the biggest tournaments in the world. In the past, present national representatives have participated in the tournament including current Socceroo Carl Valeri, Australian youth international Kaz Patafta, Matilda Sally Shipard and World Cup Assistant Referee Ben Wilson.

The opening ceremony takes place on Sunday 8th of July with the week long tournament culminating with an Awards ceremony on the afternoon of Friday 13th July bringing an end to the 17th Kanga Cup. It is estimated that $3 million is injected into the local economy throughout the Kanga Cup tournament.
