Kashima Antlers 2 FC Seoul 2 (FC Seoul win 5-4 on penalties)
Park Yong-ho converted the crucial penalty as FC Seoul overcame 10-man Kashima Antlers in a shootout at Kashima Stadium to advance to the quarter-finals of the Asian Champions League.
With the scores locked at 2-2 following extra time in the last-16 clash, Park held his nerve in sudden death to send Seoul through after the hosts had recovered from missing their opening two spot-kicks.
Kashima had struck first in slightly fortuitous circumstances as an attempted clearance hit Seoul midfielder Ki Sung-yeung on the head and broke to Shinzoh Koroki. The forward duly capitalised as he beat goalkeeper Kim Ho-jun to his right.
However, the visitors pulled themselves level in the 22nd minute thanks to some mediocre defending from Kashima when Atsuto Uchida and Daiki Iwamasa both tried to clear the same cross and diverted the ball into the path of Lee Seung-yeoul, who fired past a helpless Hitoshi Sogahata.
Seoul had shaken the J.League leaders and almost went in front one minute later but Masahiko Inoha cleared Dejan Damjanovic's effort off the line before Park headed Ki's cross against the bar on the half-hour mark.
However, Kashima went in front for a second time five minutes after half-time. Kim did well to push Iwamasa's downward header over the bar but from the subsequent corner, Takeshi Aoki leapt to head home at the far post.
Oswaldo Oliveira's side suffered a telling setback just before the hour mark when skipper Mitsuo Ogasawara collected a second yellow card and Seoul managed to take advantage of their numerical advantage to equalise in the 77th minute when Ki's exquisite 25-yard free-kick found the back of the net.
Substitute Koji Nakata almost snatched a dramatic winner for Kashima two minutes from the end of extra time but his header smacked the bar before Seoul went on to triumph in the shoot-out.
