Keane opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 14th minute but Simao Sabrosa levelled seven minutes from time to grab a point for the hosts.

The Spanish side piled on the pressure in the second period and could have easily won all three points, as Keane acknowledged after the game.

"In the first half we had quite a few chances so we knew they would come out fighting and make it difficult for us," Keane told Sky Sports.

"They put us under the cosh in the second half and then they had a few chances towards the end so all in all you have to be happy with a point."

Keane missed a gilt-edged opportunity to double Liverpool's advantage minutes after he opened the scoring, but chose to attempt an elaborate flick from a close-range volley and missed.

He admitted he regretted the decision and should have scored.

"I should have had two. It was a great ball from Stevie (Steven Gerrard)," he said.

"It's no excuse but the ball was swerving all over the place. I should have got something on it but it wasn't to be."

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez admitted he was frustrated at Keane's miss and believes that his side must be learn to be more clinical.

"In this situation it doesn't matter how you score, you have to score. That's it," said Benitez on Sky Sports.

"You have to finish when you have the chances. We were trying to find the perfect pass. We were in their final third and all we were doing was passing it."

The Spaniard said that despite Atletico's late pressure, he was disappointed to leave with just a point after conceding so late in the game.

"We have one more point now and it's not a bad position to be in, but if you concede after 83 minutes then you have to be disappointed," he said.

He also moved to reject rumours that he had earlier admitted that his side were not good enough to win the Barclays Premier League.

"What I said was that it is too early in the season to say if we can win the league," said Benitez.

"We'll have to wait and see. We have good confidence and a good squad. We just need to keep on going as we are now."
