Just 12 months after ending a very brief and unhappy spell at Liverpool by returning to White Hart Lane, the Republic of Ireland international has now joined the club he supported as a boy.

Having fallen behind Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch in the pecking order, the recent arrival of former Chelsea and Barcelona striker Eidur Gudjohnsen at White Hart Lane only increased pressure for places.

"It's absolutely unbelievable," said the Irishman, whose cumulative transfer fees total more than £70million after previous big-money moves to Inter Milan, Leeds and Liverpool.

He was given a rapturous reception by the Glasgow club's fans upon his midnight arrival, and said: "This is the reason why I've always wanted to come to Celtic.

"It's no secret over the years I've been a Celtic fan.

"I'm hoping to bring a lot of success in the short time I'm here."

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who also allowed defenders Alan Hutton and Kyle Naughton to go on loan to Sunderland and Middlesbrough respectively, insists Keane will return to London in the summer.

"It has been difficult for Robbie because he has not been starting regularly and he is not a happy lad when he is not," he said.

"But he has definitely not played his last game for Tottenham."

Portsmouth's 22-year-old goalkeeper Asmir Begovic snubbed Spurs in favour of a four-and-a-half-year contract with Stoke, whom he joined for £3.25million.

"Asmir is someone we have been tracking for some time and we believe that potentially he is the best young keeper in the country," said Pulis, who tried to sign Begovic's Pompey team-mate David James a fortnight ago only for a deal to break down over salary issues.

The biggest transfer completed in England was Manchester City's signing of Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson for a reported £7million fee.

"The key word for me is ambition. This is an ambitious club going places and there is a good chance of winning things here and making myself a better player," said Johnson, who has agreed a four-year deal.

"When a big club comes in for you life's too short to turn down an opportunity like this."

City's deal for Parma's Kenyan midfielder McDonald Mariga collapsed when he was refused a work permit.

West Ham signed three strikers in one day after completing a two-and-a-half-year deal for Blackburn's Benni McCarthy and, once the deadline had passed, confirming short-term loans for Middlesbrough striker Mido, who has been on loan at Egyptian side Zamalek, and 29-year-old Brazilian Ilan - a free agent having left St Etienne.

Wigan completed a £2.5million deal for Crystal Palace striker Victor Moses, 19, and also brought in Bolivia striker Marcelo Moreno on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Fulham finalised loans for Stefano Okaka and Nicky Shorey from Roma and Aston Villa respectively and signed German youngster Christopher Buchtmann from Liverpool.

Diomansy Kamara (Celtic), Tony Kallio (Sheffield United) and Wayne Brown (Bristol Rovers) all left on loan.

Sunderland are set to complete the signing of Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari later today once the Premier League have confirmed all the paperwork is in order.

Black Cats players Daryl Murphy and David Healy signed loan deals with former manager Roy Keane at Ipswich, while Nyron Nosworthy temporarily moved to Sheffield United.

Burnley's most significant piece of business was to extend the loan deal of Portsmouth striker David Nugent until the end of the season.
