The Matildas have downed Brazil 3-2 in front of a record crowd of 16,829 on Tuesday night in Newcastle.
Brazil made a superb start through a first-minute goal to Fabiana to send shockwaves through the Hunter.
Brazil looked on top throughout the opening exchanges with superior decision-making and an ability to switch on early attack.
The Matildas edged their way back into the contest and were rewarded in the 38th-minute via a Sam Kerr header notching her seventh goal from 12 matches which tied things up 1-1 at the break.
Australia’s second half start mirrored that of the visitors' opening with Caitlin Foord making the most of a Katrina Gorry tap-on to give the Matildas a 2-1 lead in the 47th-minute.
The hosts extended when Kerr pounced on a superb Chloe Logarzo cross in the 66th-minute for a 3-1 lead.
Brazil's Marta got the visitors back in the hunt through an 85th-minute penalty goal but it wasn't enough.
Kerr praised her teammates for setting her up so well with the ball.
"I am having a great time and I am very lucky to be on such a great national team," she told Fox Sports.
"I am lucky that I am the striker putting in the goals that they put on a platter.
“In the first half we didn’t use the space well enough but really opened it up in the second half and used it.”
Kerr said Brazil’s early goal didn’t throw the Australians too much.
“It’s disappointing and we talked about it before the game and it’s something that we are trying to get rid of in the Matildas but luckily enough we are good enough to come back,” she said.
It was the biggest crowd to a women's sporting event in Australia since an Opals game at the 2000 Olympics.
The two wins over Brazil sees the Matildas enter the top five in the world rankings.
