Perth Glory and Matildas striker Sam Kerr says she is happy the Australian public is supporting the national team but has challenged fans to also turn up to W-League games.
Kerr is coming off a big season for Sky Blue FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and the American division attracts big attendances.
The Matildas have also had a stellar year, they are now ranked sixth in the world and took out the 2017 Tournament of Nations.
Australia now end the year with two friendlies in Melbourne and Geelong against China in November which are expected to draw big crowds. However, Kerr said people should make an effort to support the domestic league.
“I think people are really proud to represent their country but that hasn’t yet fallen into our states, in Perth we’re pretty good at it but we have a small population,” Kerr said at the W-League launch.
“I hope people get out and support not only the Matildas but the W-League and I hope people can feel a real connection with their clubs and home states.
“Football has a challenge as a whole to get people out supporting teams. People like to watch it on TV and in different sports people get out there.
“It’s a summer league where people can come out in nice weather and enjoy themselves.”
Kerr also defended the W-League, feeling the quality was just as good as what is seen in America.
“In the 10 years I’ve been in the W-League, I’ve been treated better than I have been in the NWSL which is surprising,” she said.
“FFA and PFA worked together to make the standards in the W-League good and make the lifestyle in Australia really nice.
“A lot of people look to this league now and take it really seriously. In the first few years people came out for a bit of a holiday and an opportunity to see Australia but I know a lot of the girls in the US now are fighting for spots.”
