Harry Kewell's comeback countdown begins overnight when he starts on the bench for Liverpool Reserves against Everton Reserves.
It’s the first time he has made a teamsheet since scoring for Australia against Croatia in the World Cup.
The match, kicking off at 4am AET, will be a major test of Kewell’s fitness after undergoing several operations in Sydney for a series of nagging injuries and his recovery from septic arthritis which left him on critches for Australia’s game against Italy.
He takes his place on the bench in the junior derby at the club’s Racecourse Ground, playing second fiddle to Liverpool’s rising stars. Six of the starting line-up are youngsters who played in Liverpool winning Youth Cup side.
Liverpool had hoped to bring Kewell on as an impact sub in the second leg of their Champions League match against Chelsea but that now looks unlikely.
However all eyes will be on his performance in the reserves match to see if he can help the club to Euro glory should they now make it past Chelsea and into the final.
The Liverpool Reserves team is:
1 David Roberts
2 Stephen Darby
3 Emiliano Insua
4 Jack Hobbs
5 Ronald Huth
6 Charlie Barnett
7 Paul Anderson
8 Jay Spearing
9 Craig Lindfield
10 Nabil El Zhar
11 Robbie Threlfall
Substitutes:-
12 Harry Kewell
13 Chris Oldfield
14 Jordy Brouwer
15 Lee Woodward
16 Jimmy Ryan
