Harry Kewell and the gang have moved up the Australian ranks when it comes to sponsorship appeal.
Sitting only behind Ricky Ponting, Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett, Kewell is now in fourth place after a massive score increase, according to the respected Sweeney Sports Report.
Kewell’s increase in profile was by far the largest, with golfer Karrie Webb also raising her profile over the past year.
Tim Cahill and Mark Viduka also make the list with Cahill ranked 18th and Viduka 27th.
Cahill is ranked ahead of Lleyton Hewitt, Andrew Johns and Chris Judd while all three players hold more ‘appeal’ than some of Australia’s other international athletes such as Andrew Bogut, Andrew Symonds and Stuart Appleby.
The report also says over half of all Australians (51%) are now interested in football – a first for our sport. Most significantly though, is that football has now overtaken both rugby league (42%) and rugby union (40%).
Surprisingly, the report also says that attendance, participation and TV audiences remain steady but at record levels.
