Kewell, 32, whose pregnant wife and children will follow him out later, touched down at Tullamarine airport and headed straight for the Crown Casino, where he will be based for the next couple of weeks.

Extra security was reportedly on hand at the airport to cope with the influx of excited fans keen to get a glimpse of their new signing – one of the most high-profile acquisitions in the A-League’s history.

He instantly sparked a huge media scrum as he emerged from arrivals with fans and journalists all crowding in for the chance of a chat, sparking bedlam in the airport.

The former Leeds, Liverpool and Galatasaray striker has signed a three-year deal with Victory and begins training with the club this week.

His first game is set for Friday next week when Victory head to Adelaide to take on the Reds in a pre-season hit-out at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Kewell is expected to take part in the A-League season opener against Sydney FC in Melbourne on October 8.

And an English Premier League reunion with David Beckham is set for later in the year when the English star’s MLS club LA Galaxy play Kewell’s Victory on December 6 at Etihad Stadium.
