The Elland Road manager is powerless to prevent Kilkenny's departure should Arnold pick him anyway but MacAllister says it will not be a case of grudgingly releasing the player.

Kilkenny's form for Leeds in their late season play-off push reignited his Olyroo involvement and the former Birmingham City man helped the Under 23's to a 1-1 draw with Chile on Sunday night.

He is now waiting to learn his fate but if he does get the nod then MacAllister will be delighted - albeit it means he could be without the player until the end of August.

The United boss told his club's official website: "The Australian national coaches have been over and explained the situation. They can use the FIFA rules to pull him out but there's no qualms there.

"They assured us he will have the best of treatment. He was carrying an injury at the end of last season and the Australians are extremely professional in every sport.

"As much as it's a blow to us, for a player to represent his country is a 'must' and to have a chance of playing in the Olympic Games is something you can't buy.

"The fact is also when he arrives back here he will be match fit and ready to play."

The Olyroo squad is expected to be announced on Friday.
