Kilkenny returned to Elland Road for the first time after he rejected a new contract offer from the Whites to join the Robins during the European summer.

And it was Leeds who went ahead early through Adam Clayton's third-minute strike, but Bristol hit back eight minutes later through their Aussie midfielder.

Cole Skuse went on a run down the right before finding Kilkenny who curled a stunning 25-yard effort into the top-right hand corner.

Kilkenny's day looked to be going according to plan when his side won a penalty on 64 minutes, with Leeds' Aussie Paddy Kisnorbo sent off for hauling down Nicky Maynard inside the box.

However Maynard's spotkick was saved by Andy Lonergan and Leeds went on to get an 86th-minute winner through Ross McCormack.

In England's Premier League, Tim Cahill started in attack again for Everton as they defeated Wigan 3-1.

Cahill crashed a header into the crossbar before Phil Jagielka nodded in the rebound for the opener on 33 minutes.

The Aussie went close again with a header before the break, but was replaced on 83 minutes with the score at 1-1 before two late goals from the Toffees.

Elsewhere, Vince Grella was an unused sub as Blackburn defeated Arsenal 4-3 in the early kick-off.

Returning to the Championship, Rhys Williams and Scott McDonald both played and celebrated moving into top of the table after a 1-0 win over Mile Jedinak's Crystal Palace. Jedinak had an early second-half strike from 20 yards well saved.

In Switzerland's Schweizer Pokal, ex-Socceroo Scott Chipperfield scored on his return from injury as FC Basel easily accounted for Eschenbach 4-0.

Meanwhile on Friday night, in Germany's 2.Bundesliga, Robbie Kruse made his first start for Fortuna Dusseldorf as they won 4-2 at Erzgebirge Aue, although the Aussie wasn't involved in the goals.
