It was far from vintage, but it doesn't need to be for Perth Glory.
Perth have continued their dominant streak at the top, while Newcastle sunk out of the top six with a 2-0 loss in the Hunter.
Neil Kilkenny opened proceedings on the 3rd minute with a carefully dispatched penalty, after Joel Chianese was brought down by Glen Moss.
Jason Davidson then doubled their advantage on the 25th, half-volleying in off Ivan Franjic's rebounded header.
Newcastle found their feet after a shaky opening, but dominating chances-created ended in little return, as Perth continued their knack of defending resolutely and denying guilt-edged opportunities.
It's a second straight game for the Glory where Tony Popovic's side have looked second-best for long periods, without paying the price. In stark comparison to Melbourne Victory's dominating football, it further builds suspense among top-of-the-table predictions.
But Kilkenny knows that pretty football isn't the only way to the top.
"It was good for the neutrals," Kilkenny said. "Couple of chances for us, couple for them. It wasn't pretty but we got the result we came here for.
"Three points is three points, at the end of the season it doesn't say whether you played good or bad so that's what we're aiming for."
