The famous competition has lost its lustre in recent years as most sides field weakened line-ups due to their busy schedules.

After seeing the English Premier League title go to their city rivals United, Kompany said winning trophies was important for the club as they prepare to face Wigan at Wembley on Saturday.

"You have to be respectful of what the FA Cup represents and if you win trophies then it's something that will be remembered forever," Kompany said.

"You can't take those kinds of things for granted. If you win a trophy you should celebrate it and consider it a great achievement.

"You can always do better and we have next season to do that."

Kompany is wary of a Wigan side battling for survival in the Premier League after Roberto Martinez's men pushed City at Etihad Stadium in April.

Carlos Tevez gave City a 1-0 win, and Kompany said underestimating Wigan would be a mistake his side cannot afford to make.

"When they played against us at the Etihad they were really good and they caused us a lot of trouble," Kompany said.

"We managed it really well in the end because we didn't concede and we won the game but it just shows that we have to be careful.

"They are a good team and if people think it will be easy then that is a mistake."

City striker Edin Dzeko, whose future at the club remains uncertain, also spoke about the importance of the FA Cup.

"It's just a normal cup but England is the best league in the world and obviously the FA Cup is very important – maybe even more than in other countries," he said.
