“As for the fans, I'd love to have them on our side because the club is going through a bit of a bad time right now," he said. "We need them to get behind the team.”

Kosmina is banking on getting results on the board in order to win the fans over.

“My short term goal is to get Sydney FC into the finals," he promised. "And to play the sort of football people expect them to play. It all comes down to results."

Kosmina was unequivocal when asked about the quality of the squad he's inherited at Moore Park.

“I think it's a good playing roster. Their position belies their ability," he said.

"Football's not complicated. There's enough talent there. Maybe I've got to have a feel and I'm a coach who works on his gut.

“We've got 12 games, that's enough time to get us into a position of where we could be contenders.

“The players make the club, not the coach. I don't seek attention. Having said that, they [the players] need to take a bit of responsibility too.”

The terms of Kosmina's contract were not revealed. “That's between us two,” said Kosmina looking at his chairman.

“We'll worry about long term goals later. First is to fix short term. If I'm successful I'll be here in ten years. If I'm around next year. Look, I expect to be here long-term.”

“Part of my responsibility is to stabilise the playing side and the rest is up to Andrew off the park.”

Kosmina described the hotseat at Moore Park as the biggest in the A-League.

“I like to win, that's why I'm here," he said. "It's a big club in the biggest sporting city in Australia. I couldn't knock this job back. I didn't have to think twice when Andrew [Kemeny] rang.

“As such, Sydney FC has a responsibility to perform for the integrity of the league.

“Pressure's part of the job. And I love it. It's something you feed off. I'm even a bit nervous today.”

Kosmina added that he'd “learned a lot” from former Socceroo coach Graham Arnold and the senior players in the Socceroos during his time as an assistant coach with the national team this year.

As for the time he's had off since Adelaide United dumped him from its coaching position after the Reds' disastrous, Kosmina says he's had a chance to “step back after 12 non-stop years of coaching.”

Kosmina's family will remain in Adelaide this season while he lives in Sydney. When asked whether Kosmina will still be in a job even if FC don't make the finals, FC chairman Andrew Kemeny replied, “I hope so.”
