The appointment also includes an option to extend the deal further.

Kosmina has turned around Sydney’s season with the side climbing from 6th place into the semi finals, losing just once in 13 matches under his control.

He has also lifted morale at Sydney FC as they move into a period Kosmina described as crucial and challenging but exciting.

“I’m extremely happy to have signed this deal to stay at Sydney FC for a further two years,” Kosmina said. “I’ve been impressed with the mentality of the playing group and the attitude of the players since I arrived and I think we can really go places in the next few years.

“It is a very exciting time for Sydney as a club but it is also a very challenging time. Next year there is a youth league starting and I am excited by the club’s plans to develop the young players in Sydney and surrounding areas.

“Sydney FC are a big club in a big city and I’m looking forward to the challenge of taking it forward.”

Sydney chairman Andrew Kemeny said the appointment was based on discipline, confidence and the establishment of a winning culture, which he believes will breed stability at the club.

“Sydney are incredibly happy to be able to announce that John Kosmina will be the head coach for the next two years with the provision to extend that for a longer period,” Kemeny said.

“Since coming to Sydney, John has been able to instil discipline and confidence, which was his trademark as a player, into the current squad and at the same time he has been able to breed a winning culture.

“John has given the players a huge amount of self belief and we believe the loyalty and discipline he brings to the club will help us create the stability we are after.”
