SYDNEY FC boss John Kosmina wants his players to focus on the F-word against Queensland Roar tomorrow ...and that isn’t football.
The coach has told his players that finishing is the order of the day when they reach the edge of the opposing penalty area and they shouldn’t lose sight of that.
Kosmina, who will retain the same side that lost in Wellington last week, said: “For me football is about getting the basics right. We’ve just chatted about that at the end of the (training) session. Do the good things well and do them consistently and you should get results.
“There’s no argument about how well we’re playing at times, I think.
“We need to be a tad more positive, a bit more incisive maybe around the edge of the box, look to get people in behind and playing in way that you’re going to score goals rather than play football.
“Sometimes you get around the edge of the box and you’ve got to think ‘we’ve got to score’ not play football. It’s just a mindset thing.
“I’d like to see Mark Bridge concentrating on getting into scoring positions a bit more often, that’s one of the things I was talking about before when I said don’t look to play so much football around the edge of the box, think about where you can score a goal.
“I’m happy we’ve got four out of five strikers on the scoresheet so you can’t complain about it.”
Kosmina is expecting a very tough test against Queensland Roar tomorrow night and feels Frank Farina’s side are more dangerous than the Melbourne Victory team they toppled last week.
The Sydney FC boss said: “They’re a tough side to play against. The thing that is frightening about Queensland is their pace.
“They’ve got Mass Murdocca and Matty McKay that are like little ever ready men in the middle of the park. They bomb around everywhere, up down, front, back, sideways, you name it. They never stop working. They’re hard to play against and they’re hard to defend against because they make runs into the box.
“But they’ve pace off the bench in Michael Zullo and Tahj Minniecon. I think Sergio Van Dijk is a real good player and I think he’ll get better as time goes on. He has a great touch, very intelligent and Charlie Miller is very intelligent as well.
“We just need to be aware of what they do. But it’s a home game for us. We have to do what we do and do it well. If you change the whole set up to suit the opposition, sometimes you can be asking for trouble.
“I’m not going to play for a draw tomorrow night, I want to play for a win.”
As for putting his faith in the same side as last week, Kosmina said: “The more we play together the better it will become.”
Kosmina is looking forward to pitting his wits against opposite number Frank Farina but insists there’s no problem between them.
He joked: “We had a bit of banter last season and it was all a bit of fun. I suppose there’s always a bit of ‘oneupmanship’ among old teammates, everyone loves to stick it up the other one but apart from that, no.
“I’ll have a chat with Frank, it’ll be good to see him again.”
Sydney saw both Shannon Cole and Stuart Musialik called into the Socceroos squad this week and Kosmina will remind them what it was that got them there. And just importantly, to keep doing it.
He said: “Shannon got in the (Socceroos) squad on his performances in the last five games and he could get out of it on his performance tomorrow night.
That’s what football’s like. I don’t care about last week, it’s about what they do this week.”
