PS4 Player Pathway Award winner Kristian Trajceski says he rejected an offer to play with Sydney FC’s youth team because he has dreams of playing in Europe.
In September last year Trajceski was selected as one of the 24 best National Premier League players across Australia aged 16-20 to attend the NPL Player Pathway camp in Sydney.
The Hume City midfielder was selected as the winner after the three-day intensive camp and given an opportunity to train and trial with Sydney FC’s youth team.
But after Sky Blues youth team coach Rob Stanton offered the 18-year-old a contract the teenager surprisingly rejected it preferring instead to follow his overseas ambitions.
“I was happy getting offered a deal by an A-League team and it was difficult to knock it back,” said Trajceski. “But I want to go overseas. I know it’s an A-League team, and while I’m not too upset about it, it was obviously a hard choice.
“Robbie is a quality coach and I was with a quality bunch of players there as well. You couldn’t ask for more, the training was of a high standard and the quality was good. But I want to play in Europe and I want to keep that as my main goal. I really want to develop in Europe. Hopefully I head over some time this year.”
Former Hume City coach Lou Acevksi first brought Trajceski to the Victorian NPL side when he was just 15 and believes the talented midfielder can forge a career overseas.
“I know Kristian very well,” he said. “He spent three years with me at Hume City. He’s a very quiet kid, a kid focused on his football. All the kid wants to do is play football and he wants to play at the highest level possible. He wants to succeed. There’s a lot of hunger and a lot of determination there. And there’s a lot of hard work he has been putting in especially over the last year or two.
“A European deal or somewhere like that playing abroad can definitely be in his pathway if he continues progressing like he has.”
There is one league that Kristian dreams of playing for and it’s not the path most Aussies kids aspire to.
“Portugal,” he said. “I reckon I could really develop in Portugal with the playing style and it’s how I like to play as well. Obviously, everyone’s dream is to play in England and Spain but it’s Portugal because my agent has contacts there.”
“You have to take some risks in life sometimes and hopefully this one can pay off.”
Trajceski revealed he would continue to play in the Victorian NPL until an opportunity to play overseas materialised, even though Sydney FC’s youth team will also be in the NSW NPL.
“They are both the same,” he said. “Obviously it’s better to play with Sydney for the A-League experience but my agent wanted me to go overseas so I’ll be playing with Hume in the NPL top level anyway. So, I don’t mind it.”
