Germany and Real Madrid star Toni Kroos says his team didn’t deserve to progress out of Group F in Russia 2018.
South Korea stunned Germany 2-0 in stoppage time in Kazan on Thursday morning as the reigning world champions were eliminated at the earliest stage at a World Cup for the first time since 1938.
Die Mannschaft finished bottom of Group F with three points after they lost 1-0 to Mexico in the opening match, followed by a late 2-1 win over Sweden.
Mexico celebrated as Germany’s loss ensured their progression from Group F and Kroos was crestfallen post-match.
“It was a very dark day,” Kroos said in Kazan Arena.
“We didn’t expect this, we expected a long tournament for us and what we can say after the three games is we weren’t able to play our best football in all three matches.
“In the end, it wasn’t enough and if you can’t score a goal in 90 minutes against South Korea then you don’t deserve to progress.”
Kroos also admitted the team looked disconnected against the South Koreans.
“It was a problem against South Korea because I thought after the victory in the last match, it would’ve given us positive emotions and also the fact it’s another final for us,” he said.
“The first-half wasn’t good enough, we played well sometimes, but I didn’t have the feeling it was a final for us and that we had to go for goal.
“We knew Sweden was in front, we had to risk it a bit more and we had chances, but we didn’t take them.”
