Former Chelsea youth product and Central Coast Mariners winger Fabio “La Fletcha” Ferreira, is hoping to end his 11-game scoring drought against runway leaders Sydney FC.
After scoring seven goals in 21 games for the Mariners last season the exciting winger's trademark arrow celebration remains in its pouch.
Heading into Central Coast's home clash against Sydney FC, Ferreira who has a history of scoring against the Sky Blues is hoping “The Arrow” can rise again this Sunday in Gosford.
“Yes, I hope so. La Fletcha needs a goal,” he said. “I haven’t scored this season yet, so hopefully on Sunday it’s one or two goals for La Fletcha. It’s about time I think.
“It will be a very hard game obviously. Sydney have been unbeatable and are very strong but we are going to play at home and there should have a good crowd, so, hopefully we can get a result and finally get a win and get the three points. I know we can.”
It’s been lean times on the Central Coast since their 2-0 win against Perth in round eight. Four consecutive defeats saw the Mariners fall from sixth to second from bottom on the A-League ladder .
However, Ferreira said the Gosford team have their confidence again after almost upsetting Melbourne City on New Year's Eve. Added that the Mariners still have their eye on getting a spot in the A-League finals.
“It was a good result against Melbourne City who were a very strong team,” he said. “We should’ve have won that game, we created a lot of opportunities. We played well and overall the one point is good.
“It’s still very tight, anybody can still make the top six even last placed Adelaide. They haven’t been having a good run as well.
“Our results haven’t been in our favour a lot of times but we’ve been playing well and we’ve been creating chances in most of the games. You just need to win a few games in a row and the team’s up the top to lose a few games and everything can change.”
Early in the season, Ferreira was left out of Paul Okon’s squad for the opening two A-League games.
While the winger has three assists this season and has shown glimpses of his explosive power, the 27-year old admits he can do better and is determined to get back to the top of his game in the second half of the season.
“My own form has been ok,” said Ferreira. “I know I can do much better. I will try and do my best. Sometimes it just doesn’t go your way. Hopefully I can start scoring and keep assisting and my form improves until the end of the season.
“I’m at full fitness, I feel very good. The games I didn’t play it was just the coaches’ decision but I feel very good fitness wise.”
