While the UEFA Champions League semi-finals are made up of teams from the top divisions in Spain and Germany, Roca believes both his own competition and the Bundesliga still have a long way to go to match the Premier League's international appeal.

"I've been saying that for a number of years, because it's true, they (England) are far away in this game in many, many different ways," Roca said.

"Financially, for instance, they are a very strong, competitive league.

"They have a very strong market which they control very well, but also the thing that really blows my mind is the way that they promote their business internationally.

"So not only the Spanish league, I think every league in Europe and in the world is looking at the ways the Premier League develops it's international business because they are extremely professional in doing it so we are chasing up and catching them up."

England may have the commercial edge but they certainly do not rule supreme on the pitch.

Not a single Premier League team managed to reach the quarter-finals of this year's Champions League.
