New Gunners signing Alexandre Lacazette opened his account for his new club with the Londoners dominating the contest.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger fielded a strong XI, with Petr Cech in goal, Per Mertesacker in defence alongside new signing Sead Kolasinac, while Mesut Ozil was alongside Theo Walcott and in behind Danny Welbeck in attack.

German defender Mertesacker opened the scoring on four minutes, flicking home from a set-piece with Arsenal firmly in control in the first half.

Sydney goalkeeper and Arsenal fan Andrew Redmayne made a series of first-half saves with the Gunners dominant.

Redmayne also saved a 56th minute penalty from Danny Welbeck, which had been incorrectly awarded for a handball when Walcott's shot cannoned into Sebastian Ryall's back.

Sydney responded with a few chances of their own in the second 45, but Lacazette put the contest out of reach on 83 minutes, having entered the fray only quarter of an hour earlier.

Alex Iwobi drove forward and cut back for the Frenchman to slide home Arsenal's second in front of a final crowd of 80,432 fans.

Arsenal take on Western Sydney Wanderers at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.
